At the end of 2011, I thought it would be interesting to crowd-source a post on social media wishes for the New Year. The result, 44 Social Media Wishes for 2012, was the start of a fun, new, social media tradition. This year’s responses were inspiring, motivational and thought provoking. Here’s what you said your 2013 social media wishes were:
- @cc_chapman – That more people and brands remember the social part of social media and start acting better towards one another.
- @LenKendall – That likes and shares could be used to do more good for the world. Let’s end slacktivism.
- @TDefren – My wish is to see continued integration of Paid/Earned/Owned, with a broad recognition that Earned Media can be (and should be) most valued in that mix.
- @illig – A deeper discernment regarding data-driven content and an even deeper embrace of the engagement required to drive it.
- @chrisbrogan – That we get bored of the tools and fall in love with value creation.
- @cspenn – Stop applying financial calculations (ROI) to non-financial outcomes.
- @vargasl – My wish is for social media not be an afterthought and integrated into process and training – there is no lite version.
- @ikepigott – My “Social Media Wish” for 2013 is that people would continue to push for greater control of their data and sharing — and actually USE the tools that are available. My wish is that 2013 slides us less quickly toward the Panopticon than our momentum suggests.
- @nigelcameron - Twitter sees the light and mutualizes rather than IPOs so users own it.
- @justinmwhitaker – I wish social would be more social. Way too much broadcast going on, not enough connection!
- @bartrand – My social media wish is that my feed would have fewer people talking about themselves and more people listening and conversing.
- @DianeBrogan – My #smwish for 2013 is to get to meet my on line friends in real life.
- @Akelaa – My wish is for all my Twitter friends to remain happy and healthy!
- @vicequeenmaria – I want my wonderful friends who are making $ at social media to not just have everything be a sponsored post. We’d love to hear original voice.
- @BeckyMcCray – For me, it’s continued conversation with friends.
- @Tojosan – My #smwish is we stop talking about social media. Let it become just in the background while we focus on real work.
- @KT_Little – For a social media job. I really wanna get back in the field.
- @vizjer - I’m confident 2013 will prove to be successful when it comes to finding a job in the field I want to work in. I am definitely on the wish list for a job in #socialmedia #marketing #advertising
2013 is my year. I can feel it! - @DannyBrown – The end of social scoring as a barometer of influence, and influence marketing playing its role as a key lead generation tactic.
- @LaurenRosePR – To not have a limit on people I can follow for Twitter!
- @TedRubin – My social media wish for 2013 is that brands stop worrying about what’s next, focus on what’s now, and wrap their arms around the concept and value of Return on Relationship… simply put the value that is accrued by a person or brand due to nurturing a relationship. ROI is simple $’s and cents, ROR is the value (both perceived and real) that will accrue over time through loyalty, recommendations and sharing.
- @tamcdonald - My #smwish for 2013 is: Community Managers will stop being called Social Media Managers interchangeably and that Facebook will let you edit status updates (One reason why I love G+).
- @zacharyjeans – To work with a great team doing what I love.
- @wrecktify – Improved ability to share within social media networks. No more photo/filter wars.
- @adrearubin – More fearless engaging. I think orgs need to establish better comm policies. The tools are amazing-use them!
- @EricTTung – Cohesive content strategy: personas, buying cycles, channels, SEO, results.
- @JasonPeck – My #smwish is that we’ll move towards more of a multi-channel attribution model for social and all marketing efforts.
- @kr8tr - My social media wish for 2013 is that the titles of “Maven”, “Guru” and “Evangelist” go away.
I also wish more people talked about social media support, which is what we do at Rackspace. But everyone talks about Marketing all the time.
- @JamesonGBrown – To gain significant blog clout. I’m on the rise, but I’d like to become a genuine influencer in social media via blogging.
- @_LoveandLabels – I wish more people would use it for positivity & networking rather than posting photos of food & their drunken nights.
- @ShariMcConahay – My social media wish for 2013, however impractical is that they iron out all the privacy issues plagued by social media.
- @summerjoy – My wish would be for companies to be social not just hire a social media miracle worker.
- @MacLeanHeather – That more people harness the power of social for good deeds versus bad.
- @amandalnelson – My social media wish for 2013 is to see more widespread use of effective content marketing.
Folks on Facebook got in on the action, too! Here’s what they said:
- Andrew Gothelf – That Twitter and Facebook get along a little better.
- Nabil Medjebeur – Open Data.
- Simon Gascoigne – MORE. IKEA. MONKEYS.
- Felipe Castilho – I wish to read less bull$#*.
- Funda Vural – I wish to have [Salesforce Marketing Cloud] being used in 200 customers at least in our territory and answers all social media needs of the prospects.
- Judith Mackin – I’d like to see leaders in the Social Media field who have a voice, and a strong following to be exactly that: “leaders”. To provide relevant information and use their position in a positive and meaningful way.
- Jason Martin – I wish that Facebook would stop forcing content on me that I don’t want. You’re not good at predicting my interests, so quit what you suck at!
- Phillip J. Zannini – That I could figure out how to use it to grow my business!
- Agustina Prigoshin For Facebook to stop marking comments made in all caps as spam and to start spamming comments containing profanity.
- Ann Glenn – My wish is that businesses learn how to use Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms in a 360 approach so they don’t post the same to all of them and treat their “customers” differently on each platform. And for social media companies to understand that businesses want to work with them, not just do an ad buy. Have somebody at your company who understands and has worked in entertainment especially. It will help the two get integrated better. And – if you are going to make me share something give me a reason to share it. Think – would I share this? What do I get out of it, because your “customers” do.
Did last year’s wishes come true? Here’s what some said:
- @Shashib – I think my wish came true – Social media did good in the elections
- @Ponderful – Guess what my wishes did come true.
#PinkGlam @webcitygirls - @richpalmer – Indeed, it did. I think it was the powerful influence and charisma of @preppydude that forced their hand to include the feature.
- @brodigan – Holy $@*#, it did! Cc: @jimmiebjr @SkiGarmisch
- @jimmiebjr – Nope, but there’s always 2013! Cc: @brodigan @SkiGarmisch
- @SkiGarmisch – Yay for @brodigan but alas not for me or @jimmiebjr … YET.
Finally, if you’re wondering what my social media wish is for 2013, it’s that we all use social media for more than just bringing awareness to the causes we care about. Let’s use it to create change & make a real difference.
