“Television’s Biggest Night” is upon us again this Sunday, as the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards once again honor the best of the small screen.  Social media users are generating plenty of pre-awards buzz as is now standard with any major TV event.

With the event just two days away, let’s get a look at the growing social media chatter surrounding the Jimmy Kimmel-hosted event.

Volume and Trends

In the past 7 days alone, the Emmy Awards have generated 81, 818 total posts across all social media with Twitter accounting for 84% of volume.

The large spike on September 15 was caused by the presentation of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, a separate ceremony recognizing technical achievements in television (art Direction, sound, costumes, etc).

The Most-Buzzed About Shows on Twitter

Looking at the nominees for Best Drama Series, we see HBO’s Game of Thrones leading the way in mentions by a comfortable margin over its five competitors.  AMC’s Mad Men sits — dirty martini in hand — in second place just ahead of PBS’ period drama, Downton Abbey.

Turning to Comedy, NBC’s 30 Rock leads the way in Twitter mentions ahead of defending Emmy champion, ABC’s Modern Family.

Note: HBO’s Girls offered a few filtering challenges but after carefully reviewing mentions, it’s third place finish is accurate.

Emmy Awards – Gender Breakdown

Overall, females are driving the bulk of Emmy Award chatter accounting for 67.4% of posts to males 32.6%.
